Her Life in Hard Times

The Annex

Franks

Otto, Edith, Margot and Anne Frank were the first to move to the annex. Margot got a notice to go to Auschwitz so they had to start hiding earlier than planned.

"I've asked myself again and again weather it wouldn't have been better if we hadn't gone into hiding..."
~ Anne Frank

Van Pels

Hemann, Auguste, and Peter Van Pels were friends of the Frank family.  The Van Pels planned to go into the annex on July 14 but had to go the 13 due to the hard times outside.

The annex was only 500 square feet and had eight people living in it for 761 days!

Pfeffer

Fritz Pfeffer was one of the helpers dentist. He moved into the annex after the rest when things were getting rough.

"Our food is terrible! If you're trying to diet, the annex is the place to be!"
~ Anne Frank

The secret annex inside- Otto Frank's Opetka building- the families hid in from July 6th, 1942 until August 4th, 1944.

Hiding in the Annex was very hard, especially for Anne. She wanted someone to listen to her besides writing in her diary so she started talking to Peter Van Pels. Anne and Peter ended up falling in love.

They had helpers who would bring food, drinks, and clothes.  The helpers were friends or workers of the Frank family. Anne was afraid of being discovered.
